Temporary Staff Position Important Information

New classification categories and salary ranges have been created for use in recruiting and hiring temporary employees.  These new categories and salary ranges are available at http://oregonstate.edu/admin/hr/ercc/complan.

Short-Term Temporary Workload Needs

When a temporary workload need is expected to last 30 days or less, you are asked to use a temporary employment agency to provide temporary worker(s).  OSU contracts with specific agencies to provide this service.  Administrative costs associated with placing a new employee on the OSU payroll for a limited period of time can be significantly higher that those associated with using a temporary employment agency.  Therefore, any temporary employment requests 30 days or less should be filled using a temporary employment agency.

The Temporary Employment Agency Request form is available in the Recruit/Select section of the OSCAR website at https://oscar.oregonstate.edu/public/recruit.aspx .   Click on “Temporary Employment Agency Request,” complete the form and submit it to OHR.  Should you have questions or need assistance, contact Employment Services at extension 7-0552 or your business center HR staff.

Longer-Term Temporary Workload Needs

If you have longer-term temporary workload needs (beyond 30 days) that you wish to fill, go to the Recruit/Select section of the OSCAR website at https://oscar.oregonstate.edu/public/recruit.aspx and click on “Recruit Employee.”  This will take you to the online position description and recruiting actions.  All temporary staff requests are processed through the online recruitment system, except for those handled through temporary employment agencies or for temporary staff in the TS901 classification.

Temporary Farm Laborers

Farm laborers should be hired through a temporary employment agency rather than the TS901 appointment process.  The definition of farm laborer is: nursery employees or drivers that work on acreage or facilities devoted to the raising and harvesting of nursery and foliage plants.  This involves planting, fertilizing and watering, trimming, potting and repotting plants.  Farm laborers also cultivate by hand, including hoeing and weeding – regardless of the crop task.  Vineyard workers, landscaping and tree pruning/grafting are also covered under the farm labor requirements.

Contact your business center HR staff for assistance in hiring farm laborers through a temporary employment agency.  OSU contracts with specific agencies to provide this type of service.

Non-Regular Temporary Staff – TS901 Classification

The TS901 temporary staff classification is used for non-regular positions. OHR may permit your use of this classification if the position duties you are seeking to fill do not fit any of the other position classification definitions.  If you have questions about whether or not you may use the TS901 class, contact your business center HR staff.

Temporary Non-Regular (TS901) positions are not filled through the new online recruitment system.  Departments with prior approval from OHR to use this classification recruit using the Temporary Non-Regular (TS901) Employment Application available in OSCAR at https://oscar.oregonstate.edu/public/recruit.aspx .  Completed applications are to accompany the hiring packet and should be scanned into NOLIJ.
